About Me: Hello! My name is Mrs. Young and this will be my 6th year teaching 3rd grade at Powder Springs Elementary, and my 9th year of teaching in Cobb County. I got my bachelors degree in English and my masters degree in teaching from Kennesaw State University. I was born and raised in the Atlanta area and spent three of my college years in Colorado. I currently live in Cartersville with my husband Michael, my two children (11 year old twins, Perry and Pearl), my dog Hammish, and two cats, Lu and Noche.
A Quick Note: Welcome to a new school year! This is sure to be a terrific year. I am excited to be a part of your child’s education, and I look forward to the opportunity to work with you and your child. As a team, we can ensure that your child is on the path to success!
As the year begins, your child will spend time reviewing and building upon previously learned concepts. This allows your child to start the year out on a successful and positive note. Beyond academics, your child will be taught valuable life skills such as following directions, time management, and responsibility. The knowledge and skills your child gains this year will help lead your child to future academic success.
Communication between home and school is important. The best way to contact me is on Remind101 or [email protected] If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
I am looking forward to an outstanding year filled with fun and learning!

Homework: Homework will consist of 3 parts. The first part is the Monthly Reading Log,which will be sent home at the beginning of each month and will be due at the end of each month. Each month will have a required amount of reading/iStation time listed at the bottom of the page. For every 20 minutes that your child reads at home, you will write your initials in one of the spaces provided. The second part is math. Your child will bring home 2 or 3 math homework pages weekly. They will be due each Friday. Be sure to go over your child's math homework with them prior to sending it in on Friday. Throughout the year your child will be learning to memorize their multiplication facts. There will be some time for them to practice these at school but they should also spend time working on them at home. Daily homework should not take much more than 30 minutes. Homework is subject to change as needed.
Absences: If your child is absent from school, please be sure to send in a note upon his/her return so that the absence(s) can be excused.
Class Rules and Behavior Plan: Our class rules are to be safe, kind, and responsible. Students who do not adhere to the rules will fill out the Behavior Notebook What is a Behavior Notebook? A behavior notebook is a whole-class management technique for recording classroom misbehavior that integrates student reflection & ownership. It can quickly be implemented with any existing rules and discipline plan, and is used as an alternative to other methods such as a clip chart, card system, or writing names on the board. Each student has their own page, and they are all stored in a binder in a given location in the classroom. When a student does not follow a classroom rule or procedure, they record the infraction in the notebook on their individual page. This allows behaviors that disrupt the learning environment to be addressed in an efficient and non-punitive manner, without having to interrupt instruction. In my classroom, students sign in the notebook every time (even warnings) and here are the progressive discipline steps I use: 1. Warning. 2. Recess Detention 3. 15 minute time out, phone call home, recess detention 4. Half-day time out, lunch detention, phone call home, recess detention 5. Principal's office *Severe behavior will be sent directly to principal's office

Children who know their parents have regular communication with their teacher do better academically and behaviorally. The Daily Folder will have important papers from school and graded and ungraded work from your child. PLEASE CHECK THIS FOLDER DAILY. You should also place any notes, forms, envelopes, or payments in the Daily Folder. Children can be forgetful so please remind your students to pack both of these items in their backpack before they leave for school.
